A few pictures from a live performance of “The Grand Duke” by the Durham Savoyards, at the beautiful Carolina Theater. This was my first time attending an opera, and it was a fantastic experience. I was very impressed with how the performers could balance physical comedy and powerful singing, sometimes doing both at once!
The minimalist backgrounds inspired me to use a lot of negative space in my compositions. Also, I found that by moving to the sides of the theater, I could shoot into the wings of the stage and get some striking, high contrast shots with the performer spotlighted in front of an inky black background.
Theatrical performances are by necessity much “bigger” and more expressive than cinematic ones, so I really enjoyed getting the chance to capture a performance meant to fill a huge space in a more intimate and close up way.
